Nicola Fouché is a multi-disciplinary artist working across the fields of painting,
photography, drawing, illustration and children's book illustration. She has exhibited in various cities across the world and was recently awarded as one of the South African winners of the Picture This! 2024 World Wide Picture Book Illustration Competition. She was born in South Africa in 1991 and spent her childhood growing up in Namibia. She graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa with a BA degree in Visual Art (Fine Art) in 2015. She has since lived, worked in and travelled to various places and cities across Asia. She currently lives in Vietnam with her husband and dachshund, Sam, where she has established an art practise, as well as a yoga & meditation studio. Her art practise is in large part an expression of and a response to her personal experience of life and being human. She is someone who feels everything very deeply and can suffer from episodes of severe anxiety and emotional storms. Her yoga & art practices serve as anchors and are indispensable to her mental wellbeing. These practices allow her to create space for and sit with that which is uncomfortable, as well as to be present for and appreciate the small, everyday things in life.
Nicola Fouché has a deep fascination with colours, shapes and patterns and enjoys
exploring and experimenting with them in her work. Her life in Asia, and more
specifically Vietnam, has left an indelible mark on her work: the richness of the colours and patterns there, expressing themselves over and over again. She recently discovered a love for illustrating children's picture books, and hopes to write and illustrate many more in the years to come.
